THE BAD: (Y)SL NEW LOGO
what a surprise to see hedi slimane’s updated (y)sl logo. as brilliant as hedi is and as much as we love his work, this was his one grave mistake on behalf of the brand. in this day and age, factory-styled faceless-identities are churned out by ‘art decorators’ where david yurman and donna karan are interchangeable logos. hedi, you had a beautiful and iconic ‘face’ designed by a.m. cassandre back in 1963 which became synonymous with the brand to work with, what happened? we can’t fault hedi for trying to update the brand, but why change what the brand encapsulated? one can update a brand, but to replace that with a helvetica face, is nothing short of blasphemy. one day, someone will bring that back to the house and write this off as hedi’s one mistake. we’ll bet the house on it.
